I’m getting really sick of people bashing the folks doing these ice challenges. Always complaining about how many video’s are on their Facebook feed, how these people are wasting water.
I personally don’t watch them all, in fact I just scroll through most of them. I understand why they’re doing it. As for wasting water? Is bringing awareness and millions of dollars to a worthy cause a waste?
You don’t get why they do the challenge?
Well, first off it’s because it brings awareness to a horrible disease, but also in today’s society everyone wants to be a star, or just show off. So by using social media, a camera, mix a little narcissism into the mix , and a bucket of ice and you have a challenge everyone wants to do. Especially if you add some famous people into the mix. Now it’s really cool to do right? But because of this ice bucket challenge the ALS Association has seen millions of dollars pouring in in just the last few weeks. As of today it’s $88.5 million dollars because of the ice challenge.
The government doesn’t spend a lot of money on finding a cure because the condition only has a 2 to 5 year life span once you are diagnosed with it and a high mortality rate. So the ALS Association relies on donations to help find a cure, but because no on really talked about or even knew about the condition they weren’t getting donations that they needed to keep going to find a cure.
Then one guy, who is living with ALS himself, came up with the “ice challenge”, thus setting forward a craze. Pretty amazing stuff huh?
So if it bothers you that people make these video’s just don’t watch them. It’s for a cause, just like a marathon would be. And believe me, after a marathon there is plenty of water being poured down the front of the runner’s shirts.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to help a cause. If you want to donate silently then do so, but don’t judge the people who are choosing to do this challenge. It’s because of this challenge that many lives could be saved now.
What’s so wrong about that? And one last thing…If it was one of your children or loved ones, or even yourself were diagnosed with ALS or any horrible disease, wouldn’t you want them to find a cure? I don’t think you would be complaining then.
Until next time…
